Synopsis

Smart manufacturing represents a fundamental shift in industrial systems, where artificial intelligence, automation technologies, and cybersecurity frameworks converge to redefine production efficiency, resilience, and decision-making. This book, Smart Manufacturing Systems: AI, Automation, and Cybersecurity, provides a structured examination of these converging domains, with emphasis on their integration within modern cyber-physical and industrial environments. The motivation for this work arises from the rapid digital transformation of manufacturing systems, where increased connectivity and data-driven operations have introduced both unprecedented opportunities and complex security challenges. As industrial systems evolve toward greater autonomy and intelligence, ensuring secure and reliable operation has become a central concern. Prior research has consistently highlighted the dual role of artificial intelligence in enhancing system performance while simultaneously introducing new cybersecurity vulnerabilities that must be systematically addressed (Zeb & Lodhi, 2025; de Souza Junior et al., 2021). This book synthesizes contemporary research and established frameworks across smart manufacturing, industrial automation, and cybersecurity. It draws on recent advancements in explainable artificial intelligence, cyber-physical systems security, and industrial IoT integration to present a cohesive understanding of how intelligent manufacturing ecosystems can be designed, optimized, and protected (Bac et al., 2023; Cao et al., 2024; Xavier et al., 2025). Additionally, it examines practical challenges associated with system implementation, including scalability, interoperability, and risk management in complex industrial environments (Moallem, 2021; Atal et al., 2023). The primary objective of this text is to provide a comprehensive academic resource for researchers, practitioners, and advanced students engaged in smart manufacturing and industrial cybersecurity domains. It is structured to bridge theoretical foundations with applied perspectives, enabling a balanced understanding of both technological mechanisms and operational implications. Ultimately, this book contributes to ongoing discourse on the evolution of Industry 4.0 and the transition toward Industry 5.0, where human-centric design, intelligent automation, and resilient cybersecurity architectures form the cornerstone of next-generation manufacturing systems (Mourtzis, 2024).
